National History Museum aka the Dead Zoo:
Blame it on Cartoons but Children have a wonderful sense of the macabre! As a child, one of my favourite memories was visiting the National History Museum. Known affectionately as the ‘Dead Zoo’, you will be transported back in time once you enter this incredible Victorian Museum. The Museum houses more than 10,000 exhibits including ‘Darwin Flies’ collected by the famous Explorer and one of our native Giant Elks. There are a mind-boggling additional 2 million pieces in storage so you are guaranteed to discover something new every visit. This incredible collection provides a glimpse of the natural world and has changed little in over a century. As the collection is unique in range and vintage, the exhibits are a product of their age, with faded and worn pelts and visible marks from bullets and rough taxidermy.
Ark theatre is a purpose built kids theatre and is one of Dublin’s Hidden Gems. Children aged from 2 – 12 can explore creative workshops and performances including theatre, music, literature, art, film, dance. Following the main performance, bring the children upstairs to the interactive play area. Children can uncover their inner Picasso and experiment with clay, do crafts and paint. Alternatively, they can lounge in some chairs and read etc. New events such as Circus Skills Performances are added on a weekly basis so there’s always something new to discover at Dublin’s premier children’s theatre.
National Concert Hall:
This is probably a surprising addition to our Family fun list however, the National Concert Hall hosts a number of great Family friendly activities. Bring along a baby allows parents to bring their little ones to learn about classical music. Typically 3 classically trained artists play a repertoire of classical music with the occasional modern song (played on strings naturally) thrown in. The area in front of the stage is covered with a foam cover and soft toys making it ideal for young tots. Older children aged can enjoy weekly mini music workshops or Musical story workshops.
Whether you would like to unleash your inner Indiana Jones, awaken your artistic Picasso or indulge the next Vivaldi Dublin has a wide array of great Family friendly activities that everyone can enjoy. Family days out can be expensive so remember to claim your free children’s places on the City Sightseeing Dublin and Big Bus Hop on Hop off Tours.
